Environmental Planning department has been actively involved in research initiatives on Urban Biodiversity Conservation. The General Assembly declared the period 2011-2020 as United Nations Decade on Biodiversity to promote the implementation of a strategic plan on biodiversity and its overall vision of living in harmony with nature.
In response to which department held a workshop in 2010 on Biodiversity and Climate Change, which was initiated by Prof. M. S. Swaminathan (recipient of Padma Vibhushan, Padma Shri, Padma Bhusan, etc). He also stated that the “work done by the department in creating awareness of this fundamental truth is the need of the hour.
 
 
Since then the department have been actively involved in research initiatives on Urban Biodiversity Conservation. As a part of DIC project, Toolkit was developed for biodiversity conservation and management in urban areas which would be followed by all the smart cities for conservation of biodiversity. The centre recently exhibited our work and hosted a panel discussion on “Environmental Planning and Biodiversity Conservation in Human Settlements” in COP 14 at United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, which was attended by 197 countries across the globe. The centre has been been getting projects to conduct study on City Biodiversity Index and Local Biodiversity Strategy & Action Plan for various cities since then.
